Accounts and saving

The editor works without an account. Signing in adds short links, saved diagrams and the capture tools.

On this page

You can use the editor for as long as you like without an account. Sign in when you want your diagrams kept somewhere other than one browser, short links to share, README embeds, or the capture tools.

Sign in

Open the Account menu at the bottom of the sidebar and choose Sign in with GitHub or Sign in with Google. Volley asks only for your name, avatar and verified email address. After signing in you return to the page you started from.

If you use both GitHub and Google with the same verified email address, both sign-ins open the same account, with the same diagrams and plan.

You stay signed in on that browser for 30 days. To sign out, open the Account menu and choose Sign out. Your diagrams stay in your account.

Saving

Signed in, Volley saves for you:

  • A new diagram is saved automatically once you start editing it. The address changes to its short link, such as volley.sh/d/abc123, and the draft in this browser is cleared because the account copy is now the real one.
  • Every edit after that is saved a moment after you stop typing. The toolbar shows Saving and then Saved.
  • Offline? Your edits are kept in the browser and saved when the connection returns.

Examples, templates you have not changed, the empty starter diagram and the syntax guide are never saved automatically. Change something and it is.

To save a diagram by hand, for example one you opened from a share link, choose Save to your account in the Share menu.

Titles and names

A saved diagram is named after its title: line, or "Untitled diagram" when there is none. To rename a diagram, change its title.

Opening someone else's diagram

When you open a short link to someone else's diagram, the toolbar says Shared by and their name. You can change it to try things out, but your edits are not saved to their diagram. Choose Save a copy to your account in the Share menu to keep your own copy.

The Free plan keeps one diagram

On Free, your account holds one saved diagram. When it is full:

  • new diagrams stay in this browser, and the toolbar says On this device only;
  • a notice explains why, with a link to see Pro;
  • everything else works as before, including share links and downloads.

To save a different diagram, delete the saved one from Diagrams in the sidebar, or upgrade to Pro, which keeps up to 1,000. See Plans and billing.

Before you sign in

Signed out, your diagram lives in this browser's storage. It survives closing the tab, but not clearing your browser data, and it does not follow you to another browser or computer. To move a diagram, copy a share link or download the .volley file.

After you have started a few diagrams on a device, Volley suggests signing in so you do not lose them. Dismiss the suggestion and it stays away for a while.
